The Municipality of H PENN HILLS A HOME RULE COMMUNITY Mayor's Message By Mayor Pauline Calabrese A 95-year-old told his doctor that he was engaged to marry a 29-year-old woman. His doctor advised against it, warning "these types of unions can be fatal." The old man said, "That's a chance I'm willing to take." He smiled and said, "If she dies - she dies." Beauty is worth taking a chance. A few weeks ago, in April, we applied for a million dollar grant to beautify and improve Rodi Road. However, long before the federal grant application was started, we began investigating im- provements to Rodi Road. In fact, well over a year ago, we started walking along Rodi Road at various times with various groups. For the sake of safety and navigation, the Director of Planning pointed out areas where sidewalks were missing or in need of repair. Engineers from Duquesne Light assessed the current street lights to determine replacement and/or installation of appropriate lighting. The Penn Hills Shade Tree Commission (PHSTC) walked the route more than once, to explore areas in need of improved landscaping, including trees, flowers, and/or shrubs. PHSTC has applied for trees through the TreeVitalize Pitts- burgh program. On May 19, 2022, Leadership Pittsburgh, comprised of a group of young professionals, unveiled a plan to revitalize the Penn Hills Shopping Center. In collaboration with this non-profit group, the private owners and the Municipality, a long-term goal is to update and beautify the shopping center. We are working on immediate goals, mid-range goals, and long-term goals. The plan is to immediately make Rodi Road safer with proper lighting and then eventually complete the sidewalks and have better road markings. However, since Rodi Road is a state road, any change to the infrastructure would have to be done by PennDot so we will contact state officials. In the meantime, the PHSTC cites the benefits of planting trees, which ideally will begin this Fall. PHSTC tells us research shows that healthy mature trees and landscaped business districts are good for business. People shop longer and more frequently. Consumers are willing to pay up to 11% more for goods and services. Property values increase up to 15%. Tree lined streets calm traffic and reduce traffic speed. Communities with more trees experience less crime. It's been said that the best time to plant an oak tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is today.
