The church is God's primary means through which He accomplishes His plan in the world. God actually expects a commitment to the local church from everyone who claims to be a follower of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ proclaimed that He was going to build His church (Matt. 16:18) and make believers in local churches around the world (Matt. 28:18-20). I Timothy 3:15 is a very profound verse concerning the church and stresses the importance of the local church. It says, "But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou ought to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth." House of God is derived from the Greek word that means dwelling place (house) or family (household). The church is the dwelling place of God which means that God lives in and among His people. He is not referring to the structure of the building where the church meets, but the people themselves (1 Cor. 3:1617). The church is not only the dwelling place of God, but the family of God. I Timothy 3:15 also goes on and says the church is the pillar and ground of the truth. The church is the guardian of the truth. The Bible says the church is the pillar of truth. This means that the church holds up the truth. Even more so it gives reference that without the church the truth is not able to stand. If you remove a pillar from a building, the building collapses. How is the church the pillar of truth? The church proclaims the truth, administrates the truth and protects it.
