H The Municipality of PENN HILLS A HOME RULE COMMUNITY Mayor's Message By Mayor Pauline Calabrese On the evening of January 25, 2023, in Council Chambers, along with Deputy Mayor Frank Pecora, and council members Catherine Sapp, Mark Brodnicki, and Joanne Fascio, on behalf of the Municipality of Penn Hills, I had the distinct honor and privilege of performing the Induction Ceremony for ten new police officers. It was truly a tremendous evening. It was a proud moment for Penn Hills to see the newly inducted officers in ceremonial stance, in their dress blues. I told them how grateful we are for their service and the service of their fellow officers - the ones who were present at the swearing-in ceremony, the ones who could not be there because they were on duty that night, the ones who were at home, and those who have honorably fallen in the line of duty. Why are police officers so good at volleyball? Because they excel at serving and protecting. When we were elected, it was partly our charge to ensure the public safety of Penn Hills. But although, as elected officials and public servants we get the honor and privilege of performing the induction ceremony, we recognize that we do it in the comfort of the nice, warm, and well-lit Council Chambers. And while we give heartfelt thanks and sincerely appreciate their service, we will never fully understand the risks that our police officers take to protect us. "Thank you" sometimes sounds weak when we think of the magnitude of what is at stake for those who undertake public safety. Having chosen public safety as one of our top priorities, in addition to budgeting for more police officers, we have budgeted for more EMS positions, added more equipment in the EMS Department, increased funding for fire service, including giving an additional $300,000 from the stimulus funds for our firefighters, who at great personal risk, volunteer to protect our lives and property. In addition, we have added two more code officer positions and another driver in the Department of Public Works, which, among other duties, clears the roads in winter storms, for our safety. Also, in addition to the ten newly-inducted police officers, there are five more officers in training, preparing to go out on the road this Spring. We are grateful for all of you. Thank you for your service. THE JUDGE: I thought I told you I never wanted to see you in this courtroom again. Council Meeting Monday, February 20, THE DEFENDANT: You did, your honor, and I told the police officers - but it seems it doesn't make a difference to them.
