H The Municipality of PENN HILLS A HOME RULE COMMUNITY Mayor's Message By Mayor Pauline Calabrese Did you hear about the firefighter who had twins? One was named Jose. The other was named Hose B. We are so fortunate in Penn Hills. We have the second largest Fire Service in Allegheny County - with a total of six Fire Departments. Our Fire Departments respond to thousands of calls every year, providing a necessary resource to ensure the highest level of public safety to every resident and visitor in Penn Hills. These departments are staffed 100% by volunteers and equipped to handle more than just fires. They handle 5,200 calls per year, with 178 being fires last year. They handle calls ranging from the "cat in the tree call" to hazardous material calls and everything in between. At great personal risk, our all-volunteer departments respond to house fires, commercial alarms, vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, gas leaks, fuel spills, water conditions, carbon monoxide conditions and hazardous material incidents. The members of our departments are constantly working to provide the highest level of service to the community with regular training, with each department spending eight hours per week on training to maintain their skills. In addition, they educate themselves on the latest equipment and firefighting techniques. To ensure they have the equipment and resources, fundraising and community support is essential. Although the fire departments receive monetary support from the municipality, including an additional $300,000.00 last year, each department is independent and has its own chief: Station 221 Lincoln Park: Station 222 Rosedale: Station 223 North Bessemer: Station 224 Point Breeze: Station 225 Thad Stevens: Station 227 Penn 7: located on Mt. Chief Dave Sanford Chief John Capone Chief Jason O'Connor Chief Joe McMeekin Chief Bill Jeffcoat To ensure that these brave Firefighters have the necessary equipment and resources, fundraising and community support is essential. There are many ways residents can support our fire departments, including taking part in regular fundraisers, responding to letter drives, and volunteering. I am told there are many ways to volunteer and help our departments that don't require going into a burning building. There are a wide range of everyday skills that can be an asset to our fire departments, including administrative skills. We are extremely fortunate to have our Volunteer Fire Departments and our community support is the most important component to their continued success and growth. When the farmer called frantically to report that his barn was on fire, the rural dispatcher said "Calm down and just tell us how to get there." The farmer said, "Just use the big red truck."
