His name is Tyler. He wears glasses like my nephew and like my sons, he has a beard. He's "my guy" and you have yours. Penn Hills is the largest suburb in Allegheny County, with over 40,000 residents, 18,000 households and close to thirty neighborhoods. You might think there would be a massive trash collection crew. Maybe 100 drivers to cover this massive undertaking every day, week after week, 52 weeks a year? Nope. There are 8 drivers covering 8 routes. They are professional drivers, each having earned a CDL (Commercial Drivers License), which is not easy. They routinely undergo formal training for our safety, their safety and the safety of children who might be in the area of their work. On March 7th, I left my house in the wee hours to visit Republic in Scottdale, PA at 3:45 a.m., around start time. I wanted to meet these professionals, these heroes, the ones who do a really hard job for our public health and safety. I knew that the new automated trash collection system would save taxpayers money and be more efficient for us. But I wanted to see whose husband, father, brother or son was being spared serious injury by moving to this new system. Who's more important: lawyers or trash collectors?
