H The Municipality of PENN HILLS A HOME RULE COMMUNITY Mayor's Message By Mayor Pauline Calabrese On a beautiful summer night, sitting together on the porch, a husband lovingly looked at his wife and said, "Your teeth look like pearls in the moonlight." She jumped up. "Who is Pearl and what were you doing with her in the moonlight.". Like in marriage, good communication is key to good governance. I am told by the Department of Public Works that a resident complained that a pothole had been neglected. The Director asked when the resident called to report the pothole because it was not on the list. "I never called but it was all over Facebook." Contrary to pop-culture, social media is not the best way to communicate with DPW, any of our depart- ments or members of council. The best way to communicate with us is directly. Each member of council is a resident in Penn Hills and truly wants the best for our hometown. When a problem is brought to our attention, we want to work to find a solution. Once, one of the largest employers in Penn Hills wanted to expand. Naturally, neighbors had questions. At a council meeting, we agreed to facilitate a round table with the employer and the residents to address the issues. Recently, a group of residents approached council with concerns about the upcoming animal control contract. We set up a task force. Likewise, when we were alerted about a dangerous condition on a road in Penn Hills, which is a state road, we contacted PennDOT to help facilitate a solution. We on council are your neighbors, as well as your voice. We genuinely want to work for the betterment of Penn Hills- the place we all call home. Please attend a council meeting. (The second and third Monday of every month at 7:00 p.m. 102 Duff Road.) We would love to hear from you and meet you - after all, we can't read your mind. Take it from me, I never count on my husband to read my mind. He knows already what's on my mind - because I make sure to tell him.
